I think that beceause Little Kay was so brave that she kept telling the old magician that she wanted to serve the Sultan even though it was only for boys, she still went!

There was a part where the Sultan VERY suspicous about Little Kay because he kept thinking that Little Kay is not a boy, she's a girl but his tests did not work but still got more suspicous every time!

The finominal part of the story was when littler Kay showed her bravness and strength to the evil ogre and actually defeated him plus she saved all of the people and the kingdom!

A question that came into my mind was why was Little Kay the bravest even though she was the youngest?

Well I had a super time reading this tale and I hope you will be interested in reading this tale too!

                                        Sincerely,
                                                         Daniyal

Rollin - Tale: How Raven Freed the Moon

  Dear Mrs.Hamilton,

I have just started a book called "How The Raven Freed The Moon." When I read the first 3 pages it made me want to read more , which is what the author wanted to do. Also, the first three pages were pretty strong I wanted to read the rest, it made me want to cling on to the book, and not let go!
On page 17, I thought it was pretty weird of the fisherwoman to say to the daughter "Is it your baby?" because if the daughter had a baby I'm sure that the daughter would tell the fisherwoman.
When I had first read this fable I thought it was really rude to prank the daughter and fisherwoman like that. But it did make the story much more interesting.
I didn't actually understand at the end, who was the bad guy?The daughter and fisherwoman "stole" the moon (somehow) from the sky. But the raven tried to steal the moon like the mother and daughter did.
I loved this fable more then any other I have ever read! I would tell you the ending but I wouldn't want to spoil the rest of the story for you!

                                                       Your student,
                                                                     Rollin

Rajpreet - Fable: the Fox and the Crow

Dear Mrs. Hamilton,

Today I read an interesting fable called "The fox and the Crow". There are two charcters in this fable a fox and a crow. I have never heard of this fable before.

The fox is a very clever fox in this fable. What he does is that he makes the crow talk and let's the meat fall out of the crows beak and then he grabs the meat and runs away. I had thought that was a very clever way to get the meat from the crow.

I disliked the part when the fox says that the crow needs a brain. I thought that was mean of him to say. I liked the part when the author said "black as night, shiny as wet leaves and a real flower from the sky". I thought those were some great similes. I had felt bad for the crow because the fox had took the meat from her.

I thought this fable was great. I really enjoyed this fable.

                                                                     Sincerely,

                                                                                 Rajpreet

Allison: Tale - How Raven Freed The Moon

       Dear Mrs.Hamliton,

I read the fable "How raven freed the moon".I liked this fable.

I especially liked the end because when the old fisherwoman and her daughter realized that the moon they had kept for themselves looked better in the sky.

I had lots of questions to this story, like "how did the raven turn into a baby?", "how did the family take the moon?" Chandra saved the Rajah's elephants so the Rajah promised Chandra to give her rice.

The part I was surprised on was when the servants were putting rice on each square of the checker board but the Rajah was being unfair and telling his servants to so other things with the rice like put less rice on the squares. Once I finished the story I realized it wasn't right. The actual message is "It is easy to despise what you can not get".
I liked the way the author described what fox felt like when he saw the grapes it said "the fox's mouth watered as he looked longingly at them." Although the author did not directly tell the reader that he wanted the grapes instead he showed you with his words.
I wondered why the fox gave up like he did. If I was the fox I would of kept trying until I get the grapes because he's basicly throwng out food.
When the fox was jumping for the grapes it reminded me of a time I could not reach something. Another reason is I love how he took such an unlikely character to win and found a great way to make him win with a great message.

I really liked the two beginning paragraphs. This is because all the other times I have read this fable it's always been the same. It just jumps right into the race but in this version it adds the feelings. Like why the tortoise challenged the hare to the race and some conversation during the race this is what the hare said "How do you expect to win the race when you are walking along at your slow, slow pace? I have never heard that before.

When it said "but it was to late.Tortoise was over the line", it reminded me of last years track and field in the 400 I was ruuning to the finish line but then Sophia crossed it first!

                                        Sincerely,
                                                         Hamilton,

I am reading a story called "The Monkey and the Crocodile".

I think there is a message in this text. I think it might be "Choose
your friends wisely and/or make better decistions, or stop and think
before you act."

I think I can make a prediction. That part in the story was when Mr. Peabody told Billy to get a fluffy pillow, then cut it in half and let the feathers fly off across Happville and then told him that those feathers were like people. Then told him to go pick all those feathers up so Billy realized that he shouldn't have started that rumor because it was like telling all of those feathers that rumor and now he has to tell them it wasn't true.

Sincerely,

Daniyal.

Fable: The Monkey and the Crocodile - Rajpreet

Dear Mrs. Hamilton

Today I read this amazing story called "The Monkey And The Crocodile!"

I like the authers style because the author had made a message about caring for someone that they need to but they have to hurt someone else to make the other person happy. It is nice for one person but not the other.

I was visualizing when the author had said "The crocodile swam with him out into the deep wide river." I thought that was good writing. What made me wonder was if the crocodile was actually going to kill the monkey and bring the heart or if he is going to ignore his wife.

The part that puzzeld me was when the crocodile actually asked for the monkey's heart which was his friend. If someone would have told me to get something from my best friend I would say "I can't get that but I can do something else that can help you.

I liked the part when the monkey shared his food with the crocodile and the crocodile's wife. I thought it was nice of him to share food.

I also liked the part when they just introduce theirselves in a very polite way and they got along together just fine.

I thought this story was great. I think I could not write better. I enjoyed this story as much as I enjoy playing outside.

                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                    Rajpreet

Fable: The Emperor's New Suit - Jessica

Dear Mrs Hamilton,
While I was reading a fable called The Emperor's New Suit by Hans Christian Anderson I realized that I have read it before in a picture book when I was younger. I do not think that this story was any different than the one I read in the picture book.
This story is one of my favourite stories ever. I like it so much because I think it gives a great message, don't be greedy and also it is very funny and entertaining because you know the clothes the swindlers are making fake but everybody else doesn't.
One part of the story that surprised me was when the child told the emperor that he wasn't wearing any clothes. It surprised me because I thought everyone knew what the swindlers had told them "anyone who can't see these clothes means they are unfit for their office or is stupid." So I thought nobody had the guts to call themselves stupid.

     Sincerely,
                 Jessica

Fable: The Monkey and the Crocodile - Kiara

Dear Mrs. Hamilton,

I am reading a text called "The Monkey and the Crocodile. I thought the authors words that he used were great vocabulary words.

        Sincerely your friend,

                    Kiara

Fable: The Monkey and the Crocodile - Rollin

     Dear Mrs.Hamilton,

I am reading a fable text called "The Monkey And the Crocodile" by Rohini Chowdhury. I have never heard of this author so I'm looking forward to reading this story.
When I first read the title I made a prediction that there was going to be a crocodile that would eat the monkey. When I read the first paragraph it had said that the monkey had no family, that made me ask 2 questions, where was the monkey born? How was the monkey born?
I thought it was very kind of the crocodile to make friends with the monkey because most crocodile stories and real life crocodiles would eat the monkey. In paragraph 3 I started to wonder if crocodiles really do eat fruit because I don't know that much about crocodiles. I never thought a river would run out of fish.
I didn't like the crocodile's wife. She was very mean because what if it was her friend that the husband wanted to eat? If I were this male crocodile, I'd hate to admit it I would've chosen my friend. I just don't know why the male would still love her. It's his friend.
My favourite part of this fable was when the monkey and the crocodile became friends. I really enjoyed that part because that was the monkey's first and only friend.
When I read the title I thought it was a little dull but then when I actually read the text I thought it was very interesting, parts like "If you love me you will get your friend the monkey and let me eat his heart." I thought this sounded mysterious and made me wonder who he would choose and what would happen! I love reading books like this.
If you read this I hope you enjoyed it because it got my attention!
           Your student,
                    Rollin

Fable: The Monkey & the Crocodile - James

Dear Mrs. Hamilton,

The monkey and the crocodile is a great story. I think the lesson here is "when you're in a sticky situation you need to think fast or there might be consequences".
Also I like the writer's feeling. I think he thinks all animals should be friends but that can't happen or it will upset the balance of nature. That's why he figured it out at the end and that's why they broke up at the end but he wanted it to be interesting so he made it so he needed a monkey's heart to cure his wife's illness. Like I don't even believe he thought it was true like who would believe that but its kind of funny too.
Later well actually earlier the "Crocodile was apelled." I wonder what apelled means maybe repelled. Anyways it's a real good story. The emperor is always obsessed with clothing and so am I. And I can connect to his life because he had a half sister and I have a half sister named Stephanie Marie.
I went on Wikipedia to find other books that he wrote and I am looking forward to reading his other books "The Little Mermaid, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen."
I can relate to "The Emperor's New Suit" because I have watched a show called "The Emperor's New School." This book is written by Elaine Pedlar

I like how the police man helped the girl find her mom because she was hurt and and she was scared to go back because of the boys that were bullying her.

I feel bad for the mom and the girl because they hardly have any food and they are homeless. I also dislike when the girl gets bullied from the boy at her school.

I like the ending because it is a happy ending. In the ending the girls mom finds a home for her and the girl and her mom even finds a job. Nelson is Missing" by James Marshall. This is one of my favourite books!

Harry Allard makes very interesting pictures. He puts so much detail into his pictures. Like in the text it says"The kids in room 207 were acting up again.S pitballs were stuck to the ceiling, paper airplanes whizzed through the air." I like that in stories. It always makes me want to read the book again.

What puzzled me about the book was that the kids were goofing off right in front of the teacher.

I also noticed that after Miss.Nelson acted like Miss. I picked this because the title sounded interesting.

I really liked the starting too, the book is about this stranger that farmer Bailey hit by his car. I found this book very interesting.

But there were parts that puzzled me. I just wasn't sure what the author was trying to say. Parts confused me and made me ask questions. Why didn't the stranger sweat? Why did he blow on the leaf? I thought that was meaningless and why did the stranger leave? Did he recover?

I wondered when the stranger will heal. I don't understand why the rabbits liked the stranger so much. Also in the book it says farmer Bailey occasionally stopped to rest but the stranger didn't even sweat!

The doctor said the stranger would be healed in days instead of weeks. Why would the Bailey's let the stranger stay there at their house? They don't know anything about him.

This book "The Stranger" was confusing but I still enjoyed it plus I enjoyed the pictures they explained what was happening.

Your Student,

Rollin

Picture Book: Little Red Riding Hood By: James Mashall - Makenna

Dear Mrs. Hamilton,

I am reading a book called "Little Red Riding Hood" by James Mashall. I have read a book by this James Mashall, and I like to read books by this author because he seems to twist around the middle and the end.

In the text it says Little Red Riding Hoods mom makes custard to give to her sick grandmother. The "Little Red Riding Hood" I have always heard they bake cookies to give to her grandmother.

When Little Red Ring Hood entered the deepest darkest part of the woods she said she was very scared. I know I would be scared as well if I was alone in the deepest darkest part of the woods too. In the woods she met up with a large wolf. If I ran into a large wolf I would be really scared! The wolf was playing a trick on Little Red Riding Hood. He was planning to eat Little Red Riding Hood! The wolf acted very polite and nice so Little Red Riding Hood would not suspect anything though.

The wolf snuck into the grandma's house and ate her up without chewing! Then Little Red Riding Hood appeared and the wolf ate her up as well. Then the huntsman saved the grandma and little Red Riding Hood!

I think I like the other version better but I really like the author's craft and how he made his own version of the story.

Sincerely,

Makenna

Picture Book: The Three Little Pigs By:James Marshall - Jessica

Dear Mrs Hamilton,

While I was reading a book called the Three Little Pigs by James Marshall, I realized how he had twisted around the story. Many parts were different from the original Three Little Pigs. I enjoyed it a little bit more than the original. One of the diffrences I noticed was in this story the wolf asks the last pig to go pick some fruits and vegetables but really he was going to try to eat him. Another difference I noticed was at the end of the story the pig actually ate the wolf and that is very different. Althought I was surprised when the first two pigs were eaten.

At the begining of the story I predicted that it would be a little different then the original because I have read story's by James Marshall before.

Something that surprised me was when the pig arrived an hour before he was supposed to when the wolf and him were going to go turnip picking. I think he did it because he knew the wolf was going to try to eat him.

In the story I noticed that the two brothers that made their houses out of weak materials ended up being eaten. Yet the brother who made his house out of a strong material ate the wolf.

Sincerely,
Jessica

How to write a reading response

Dear Students,

This year, you will post reading response blogs, in the form of an informal letter, about the books you have read or are in the middle of reading.

Your reading responses should include some of the ideas listed below while giving specific examples.

Tell what you like or dislike about a book an why.

Tell about parts of your book that puzzled you or made you ask questions.

Tell what you noticed about the characters, such as what made them act as they did or how they changed.

Write about something in the book that surprised you or that you found interesting.

Write your predictions and about whether your predictions were right.

Ask for help in figuring out the meaning of your book.

Tell about the connections that you made while reading the book.

Tell how it reminds you of yourself, of people you know, or of something that happened in your life.
